Connect Youth Leader Suicide Prevention Program

The Connect Youth Leader Suicide Prevention Program is a powerful, research-informed initiative that empowers high school students to take an active role in suicide prevention and mental health advocacy.

This program goes beyond training—it’s about creating lasting culture change. Through youth-led, adult-supported efforts, the Connect Youth Leader Suicide Prevention Program helps build a safer, more connected school environment where students feel valued, heard, and supported. The program prepares students to develop and lead suicide prevention efforts within their school community and train future Connect Youth Leaders to ensure sustainability for the program.

Program Objectives

  • Educate youth on risk and protective factors for suicide.
  • Reduce stigma around mental health and help-seeking.
  • Provide skills to recognize warning signs in peers.
  • Encourage youth to seek adult help rather than take on the role of counselor.
  • Establish a sustainable and effective approach to suicide prevention.

What Makes This Program Unique

  • Youth-Led, Adult-Supported
  • Self-sustaining
  • Developmentally Appropriate and Trauma-Informed
  • Rooted in Safe Messaging Guidelines
  • Integrated with School-Based Support Networks
  • Aligned with National Best Practices
  • Follow-up Support & Implementation Framework Guide

Training Format

The program consists of two parts:

Part 1: Ensure adult co-leaders have a working understanding of suicide prevention principles and best practices. Prepare adult co-leaders to understand the Youth Leader Program and how it can be used to make an impact in the school community. Participants will learn the core principles of Connect Suicide Prevention training, how Connect Youth Leader was adapted for youth audiences, and what is expected from adult co-leaders.

Part 1 can be delivered in multiple formats depending on the needs of the school community.*

  • 90-minute Virtual Session
  • In-person or Virtual Connect Suicide Prevention Training for adult school personnel (length of training can be tailored to meet needs)

*Cost will be adjusted to reflect the selected format for Part 1.

Part 2: A full-day, in-person training for Youth Leaders and adult co-leaders. A typical schedule is 8am/9am-2pm/3pm with 30 minutes for lunch and additional shorter breaks. The training includes interactive discussions, skill-building exercises, and practical scenarios tailored to youth. Youth Leaders and adult co-leaders learn together how to effectively deliver the content to audiences within the school community.

Future Implementation

  • Ongoing communication between youth leaders and school staff.
  • The curriculum is meant for Youth Leaders to be active participants in its delivery. This can be with trained adults co-leading or simply adult supervision and support. School personnel should not use the Connect Youth Leader curriculum, content, or materials without youth involvement and participation.
  • Youth Leaders are authorized to train new Youth Leaders each year to sustain the program. New adult co-leaders must be trained by NAMI NH.
  • Ensure a support system along with resources are in place within the school post-training so they are available for students to utilize.

SurvivorVoices

SurvivorVoices is a National Best Practice program that teaches those bereaved by suicide how to speak safely and effectively about their loss. Survivors of suicide loss are key partners in suicide prevention and postvention. No one is more passionate about preventing further suicides and letting other survivors know they are not alone.

Stories of suicide loss told from the heart are powerful. They promote healing for those who are bereaved, educate the public about how to support survivors of suicide loss, and increase awareness of suicide risk factors and warning signs.

While some individuals who are trained by SurvivorVoices may never share their story publicly, participation in the training helps them with their own grief process and connects them with other survivors. For those who go on to share their stories publicly, they often use this new connectedness to energize suicide prevention and bereavement support efforts (e.g. starting a survivor of suicide loss support group, organizing a NAMI Walks team, hosting an International Survivor of Suicide Loss Day site, starting a Lifekeeper quilt project, initiating a suicide awareness event).

Experience in Meeting the Needs of Specialized Audiences

The Connect Program has more than two decades of experience adapting to the cultural needs of communities and audiences. To date, Connect Training has been delivered to more than 50 Native American tribes, Alaska Native regions, and the Pacific Islands of Hawaii, Guam, and Northern Mariana Islands – in addition to 49 U.S. states. Cultural elements are infused into the process and content depending on where the training is being delivered.

“Importantly, the [Connect] training underscored that any effective crisis response must begin with cultural humility. Meeting people where they are—honoring their values, traditions, and norms—is central to the postvention work NCSS is building into its broader community safety net. As the Zero Suicide Committee continues to refine its strategies, culturally attuned and person-centered responses remain foundational.”
